Ecological study confirms the leading position of prestressed BRESPA ®-Decken
That BRESPA® -Decken requires significantly less concrete and steel than semi-finished or in-situ concrete elements. But are they more ecological? After all, the high preparation costs at the factory and the longer transport to the construction site have a detrimental effect on the life-cycle assessment.
As DW Systembau wanted to know for sure, it commissioned Öko-Institut e.V. in Freiburg to carry out a comprehensive ecological study. Using a four-storey model office building as an example, Dr. Dietlinde Quack and her team investigated the environmental effects of in-situ, semi-finished ("Filigran") and pre-stressed hollow core slabs with regard to the delivery of materials to the factories, production, installation, demolition and recycling. The results are clear: in two of the five categories, the hollow core slabs scored the highest. And all the more gratifying, since the scores are in the important categories "Cumulative primary energy costs" and "Greenhouse gas potential".
In comparison to semi-finished and in-situ slabs, the resource savings of our high-tech product are very high: around 50 percent less concrete and 75 to 80 percent less steel.
The “Filigran-slabs” achieved a much lower rating. They did not take first place in any category. On the contrary: in four of the five categories, the semi-finished slabs ranked last. The importance of these results is shown by the topic areas covered by certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. All five of the environmental influences investigated enter into the evaluation. Naturally, this also applies to the consumption of material, where the pre-stressed hollow core slabs have significant advantages over all other types of concrete flooring systems in the criteria group "Utilisation of resources and amount of waste produced".
Further information regarding these matters and the life-cycle assessment of "concrete flooring" by Öko-Institut e.V. in Freiburg can be found at www.dw-systembau.de under downloads and can be translated if needed.
