Finland: “Architectural award Concrete Façade 2009” – Special prize for Parma Oy, Finland

The Helsinki based Heikkinen-Komonen Architects received the “Architectural award Concrete Façade 2009” for their design of the Hämeenlinna Provincial Archive.
The Provincial Archive building plays a visible and recognizable role in the townscape of Hämeenlinna. The building is minimalistic and clean in form. The expression of the archives section is based on simple and natural use of concrete, with the graphic pattern method used to bring out the delicate and sensitive properties of the rugged material. The concrete used on the facades acts both as a graphically beautiful surface reflecting the activities in the building and as a strong and massive enclosure protecting the valuable content.
The cladding of the windowless archives container is graphic concrete. The patterns were found in documents dating back four hundred years. The graphic concrete surfaces continue from the facades into indoor spaces connecting the external with the internal.
The new Hämeelinna Provincial Archive building is an example of a project where expert cooperation between various parties has lead to a high-quality and individual end-result. Skilled and innovative design has combined the new aesthetic possibilities of concrete with technical durability.
The high standard finished appearance of the building along with the technically difficult precast construction and installation work was done by Parma Oy.
Estonia: “Concrete Building of 2009” - Special prize for E-Betoonelement for PÖFF-wolf

E-Betoonelement received the special prize for PÖFF-wolf at the “Concrete Building of 2009” contest. PÖFF-wolf is a polished concrete sculpture, which is situated in the city centre of Tallinn. The statue was created in cooperation between E-Betoonelement and people from the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (an international Estonian film festival: PÖFF-Pimedate Ööde Film festival). The PÖFF-wolfs name is also taken from the film festival.
The Concrete Association of Estonia is organizing once a year the contest “Concrete Building of the Year” in Estonia to find the best concrete building in Estonia. The objective of the contest is to promote concrete as a modern and durable material and highlight attractive buildings that exhibit the advantages of using concrete as a construction material.
Although the jury found that the contest regulations don’t allow concrete sculpture to win the title of “Concrete Building of 2009”, because it is simply not a building, nevertheless, it was the jury’s big favorite. Jury found that it is a good demonstration of a possibility to use concrete outside the circle of civil engineering. The sculpture expands the artistic possibilities of concrete and makes the urban space more attractive by its tasteful look and impeccable production.
Enno Rebane, member of the panel: “The slightly unexpected use of concrete has been formed into a pleasant and harmonic result owning to the tasteful and concrete selection of material and the cooperation between the author (sculptor Simson von Seakyl) and the material producer (AS E-Betoonelement).”
In addition of winning the prize for PÖFF wolf sculpture E-Betoonelement’s, wall elements got a positive mention by the panel for the project of Otto Bock Estonia AS industrial building, which was awarded a special prize for architecture at the “Concrete Building of 2009” contest.
Comments by the panel: “The architect's goal was to add value to the simple industry building by strongly structured and interesting outdoor relief and by the plain concrete elements. This is a nice architectural request and all what was requested is also nicely implemented in that house. The result is a good-looking element building without any exaggeration. The most exciting part of the building is an element surface carried out by rubber matrix which reminds a bar code.
